Low-carbon ammonia

Engineering and delivering large blue ammonia/urea projects worldwide

Scroll down for more

From an overall lifecycle carbon intensity standpoint, low-carbon hydrogen with CO2 capture rates beyond 95% is the best available clean energy carrier today when methane emissions are properly controlled and CCS outlets are available. Blue ammonia is the most promising at-scale hydrogen carrier and potential clean fuel for various applications.

Vinay Khurana, Vice President Hydrogen Market, Technip Energies

Delivering ammonia and integrated ammonia/urea units to ammonia markets worldwide

Technip Energies offers single-point responsibility for the design and construction of hydrogen and synthesis gas production units. Our solutions range from process design packages to full lump-sum turnkey projects.

Through our decades-long expertise in engineering and delivering large ammonia and integrated ammonia/urea units worldwide, as well as our access to low-carbon ammonia and methanol technology, we have successfully positioned our company across the value chain of the low-carbon hydrogen ecosystem.

For a grassroots low-carbon ammonia plant, CO2 emissions are largely avoided by using part of the produced hydrogen instead of fuel gas at the reformer and sequestering the CO2 from the syngas.

Demand for blue ammonia production as an energy vector is expected to drive growth. Clean ammonia is the lowest-cost hydrogen derivative as a liquid energy vector. As an energy vector, sustainable ammonia also has a very high volumetric energy density compared to other modes of hydrogen transportation.

While ammonia today is a key intermediary for industrial fertilizer production, blue ammonia offers the promise of being a low-emission fuel for jet engines and fuel cells and likely will dominate as percentage share in the low-emission marine fuels market.

In addition, low-carbon, ammonia-fired gas turbines are being developed for power generation, which is expected to significantly contribute to demand growth as low-carbon ammonia technology is further developed and improved.

Proven experience with ammonia licensor

Technip Energies has been a member of Haldor Topsoe (HTAS) Technologies Club of Contractors since the 1970s. We are capable of performing agnostic technology assessments of ammonia licensors on behalf of our clients.
