Technip Energies announces the successful launch of Carbios industrial demonstration plant for endless PET recycling

Scroll down for more

Carbios inaugurated in Clermont-Ferrand an industrial demonstration plant of its C-ZYME® technology, produced in collaboration with Technip Energies.

Carbios is a pioneer company in the development of enzymatic processes to produce PET (polyethylene terephthalate) of equivalent quality to virgin from plastic waste (bottles, films, packaging, etc.).

This industrial demonstration plant is the result of close collaboration between Carbios and Technip Energies. As part of this project, Technip Energies provided process development and industrialization services as well as engineering and site supervision.

The  demonstration plant will validate the technical, environmental and economic performance of the enzymatic PET recycling process for the establishment of the Process Design Package for C-ZYME® technology. Based on this industrial definition, the first business unit with a capacity of around 40,000 tonnes is envisaged by 2025. Other industrial units could then be built and operated under licenses.

Alain François, Director of the Technip Energies Operational Center in Lyon, commented: “Today we are taking a major step in our long-term project with Carbios. Since 2017, we have been working on ramping up its process to ensure its industrial competitiveness. With this demonstration plant, Technip Energies teams are once again demonstrating their expertise in the field of process industrialization as well as their flexibility.

"The project was carried out in close collaboration with the Carbios teams and according to management methods adapted to the size of the plant. This ability to adapt and listen to our customers is essential in the conduct of innovative projects in the field of sustainable chemistry."

About Carbios
Carbios, a green chemistry company, develops biological and innovative processes representing a major innovation in the end of life of plastics and textiles. Through its unique approach of combining enzymes and plastics, Carbios aims to address new consumer expectations and the challenges of a broader ecological transition by taking up a major challenge of our time: plastic and textile pollution.
Established in 2011 by Truffle Capital, the mission of Carbios is to provide an industrial solution to the recycling of PET plastics and textiles (the dominant polymer in bottles, trays, textiles made of polyester). The enzymatic recycling technology developed by Carbios deconstructs any type of PET plastic waste into its basic components which can then be reused to produce new PET plastics of a quality equivalent to virgin ones. This PET innovation, the first of its kind in the world, was recently recognized in a scientific paper published in the prestigious journal Nature. Additionally, Carbios is working hand in hand with multinational brands — like L’Oréal, Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe — to implement its technology, and to lead the transition toward a truly circular economy.

The Company has also developed an enzymatic biodegradation technology for PLA (a bio sourced polymer) based single use plastics. This technology can create a new generation of plastics that are 100% compostable in domestic conditions, integrating enzymes at the heart of the plastic product. This disruptive innovation has been licensed to Carbiolice, a joint venture created in 2016, which is now Carbios’ subsidiary.
